Ed lived in Winchester on Mayflower Rd. for 55 years. It was a wonderful neighborhood to raise a family with friendly neighbors and many children.
The summer of 1960 when he moved in, he learned the school board had cancelled the school bus to Parkhurst School and all the children would now just walk to school on busy Lockland Rd., with no sidewalks. Ed informed the neighbors and, with the newly formed Birch Knoll Association, told the school board they were going to picket Governor Volpe’s home with a barrage of mothers and children (strollers and all) with signs. The school board backed down and agreed to reinstall the buses until after a sidewalk was built.
Later, when the Winchester Country Club wanted to build a driving range behind all the houses on the country club side of the road, he organized an all-out effort by the Birch Knoll Association to stop the project. He was told Birch Knoll had no chance to defeat the WCC but after a costly and long battle, Birch Knoll prevailed by one vote. In the long view, the next effort by the WCC, which was successful, was a less invasive plan for the residents of Mayflower Rd.
Thanks to all the wonderful and supportive people on Mayflower Rd. and all of Birch Knoll, this was probably more meaningful than all he accomplished in his lawyer and banker career.
