Obituary for Daniel J McCartney

Daniel Joseph McCartney, of Winchester, MA, died unexpectedly of complications due to Lyme disease on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the age of 60.

Born in Medford, MA, on April 15, 1959, Dan shared a joyful childhood with his older sisters Kathleen, Susan, and Jeanne and their late parents, George and Rose. Their childhood home on Brooks Park was filled with love.

Dan graduated from Medford High School in 1977, where he formed a tight circle of friends. This close group continued to grow in the decades that followed in both number and commitment to one another. Over the years, they shared endless fun and countless good times. Dan will be missed deeply.

Dan graduated from Tufts University in 1981 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He pursued a career as a sales engineer at Tektronix before joining BBG New Media as President with his Tufts classmate and close friend Joe Nicholson. Together, Joe and Dan grew BBG to be a preeminent New England agency and successfully sold the company to Think New Ideas Inc., a national new-media shop affiliated with Omnicom Group.

After retiring from the business world, Dan transitioned his focus to teaching math and coaching – a lifelong dream. He taught mathematics at The Rivers School for 15 years and was Chair of the Math Department for 8 of them. Dan was a natural in the classroom; he had found his calling. Dan was passionate about teaching and committed to each and every student. His goal was to make learning math fun and encourage a joy of learning. Dan cared deeply about his students and was a role model for many. Dan was as committed to his colleagues and their success as he was to his students, and he was a friend and mentor to faculty and staff throughout the school.

Dan was a family man, devoted to his wife Angela and their three children Stephanie, Jaclyn, and Joseph. The relationship that Dan and Angela shared for 36 years was one of the deepest love and lasting devotion. Dan’s ability to make Angela laugh was unparalleled. Dan shared a special relationship with each of his children and loved them wholeheartedly. When asked to describe their father, Dan’s children described him as “the best” – perfect father and best friend.

When Dan entered a room, everyone wanted to be with him – not only for his larger-than-life personality but also for his extraordinary ability to connect wholly with those around him. Everyone wanted to share a conversation with Dan, and everyone felt special in Dan’s company.

Dan is survived by his wife Angela (Graziadei) McCartney; his children Stephanie, Jaclyn, and Joseph McCartney; his sisters Kathy McCartney, Susan McCartney, and Jeanne Bouchard; his brothers-in-law Bill Hagen, Eric Plugis, John Bouchard, John Graziadei, Richard Graziadei, James Graziadei, Jerry Tackett, and Jack Scratchard; his sisters-in-law Teresa Graziadei Andrejka, Barbara Leistrum, Pamela Graziadei, Phyllis Tackett, and MarieJo Graziadei; his son-in-law Jay Petricone; 29 nieces and nephews; and many close friends who will all miss him dearly.
