Peg had so many chapters in a life so full. Peg was born in 1923 and was the oldest of four brothers: Bob, Bill, Larry, and Gerry; and one sister, Patricia, all spanning 23 years. Peg graduated from St. Clements High School, Somerville, in 1941. Peg and Art married in 1948. After losing their first son at a young age, they raised six boys in East Longmeadow and Newton. Later years took them to Eastham, Harwich Port, Andover and to winters in Florida. Following Art’s passing in 2008, Peg has spent the past 10 years making home at the Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover. Peg is survived by six sons, 15 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Peg spent several high school summers with her brothers at a lake cabin in Southern Maine. This was an introduction to a lifetime of outdoor adventure. After kids, Peg and good friend Angela Sullivan (6 boys and one girl) deciding that extended camping trips at Dennison and Sebago Lakes were a good way to keep their sanity by letting the kids loose. This worked best when both families did this together with all 13 kids. Then there was the big Deering 11,000 mile / 6-week around-the-country and Canada car trip with six boys in a station wagon and all the stories that went with that trip. That was followed the next summer by several weeks in northern Maine including an infamous trek up Mt. Katahdin and across Knife Edge Trail with six boys 4 to 14. The Ranger said it would be OK!
Peg supported Art throughout his career in the optical business, particularly following the founding of the Winchester Optical Shoppe in 1958. Peg got her optical license in 1975 and she held down the fort solo from time to time. Together Art and Peg ran Winchester Optical until 1981 crafting the finest eyewear in the industry.
There were many penny ante poker game nights amongst Peg, her parents, and siblings. This card playing fun took the form of Rummy 500 with Peg and her sons. Peg has remained the reigning Rummy 500 champion to this day. Peg was also a regular cribbage, bridge, and poker player at Edgewood. In the early years at Edgewood, we would all have to call ahead of time before visiting so Peg could see if she could squeeze us into her activity schedule. Peg loved reading books. Nearly every book in the extensive Edgewood library has been checked out and read by Peg.
Throughout her life, Peg had a strong faith and dedication to prayer. Her granddaughter Lynda made a set of rosaries for her. Peg used them so often that the shine on the beads wore off entirely and Peg’s son John had to repair the rosary countless times over the last several years.
Peg had tremendous perseverance and a very strong will to live. Peg was goal driven attending her sister Patricia’s 50th wedding anniversary party on September 26 and celebrating her own 96th birthday on November 30th.
Peg was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother full of joy and gratitude and rarely without a smile. Peg, we love you and you will be in our hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, Peg’s family suggests that donations be made to a charity of your choosing or by mailed check to Edgewood Retirement Community, 575 Osgood Street, North Andover, MA 01845 to the attention of Employee Appreciation/Deering Fund, Bryan Devoe, Finance. Edgewood is a 501c non-profit and any donations would go to the employees that have made life for Peg as enjoyable and comfortable as possible over the last 10+ years.
Visiting hours will be held at the Lane Funeral Home, 760 Main St. (Rte. 38) WINCHESTER on Sunday December 15th from 1:00-4:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Winchester on Monday December 16th at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment Wildwood Cemetery Winchester.
