Obituary for Mary Ann Healey-Villa

On Wednesday March 20, 2019, Dr. Mary Ann Healey-Villa of Winchester, MA, loving wife and mother of two sons, passed away at the age of 83.
Mary Ann was born on August 10, 1935 in Cambridge, MA to Albert and Florence (Toomey) Healey. Following her graduation from Regis College in Weston, MA, she completed a yearlong chemistry fellowship at Boston College. In 1963 she received her medical degree from the former Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, and she proceeded to train in pediatrics at Boston City Hospital, serving as Chief Resident. On June 17, 1967 Mary Ann married Theodore (Ted) Villa at St. James in Arlington, MA, and they went on to have two sons, Ted and Mark.
Following residency, Mary Ann went on to become the first director of the Child and Youth Clinic established through St. Elizabeth’s Hospital to provide medical care to traditionally underserved children in the Allston/Brighton area. She held this position for 15 years, and following its cessation, she established a private practice in Arlington, MA from which she retired in 2003. She had fiercely dedicated patients who appreciated her combination of wisdom, compassion, and honesty.
In pursuing her medical degree in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, Mary Ann chose a path not open to a large number of women at the time. Through her remarkable intelligence and dedication, she helped to pave the way for the next generation of women physicians.
Mary Ann was an active member of St. Eulalia’s Parish in Winchester, MA, singing soprano in the choir for nearly 30 years. She was the best knitter any of us ever knew, making Aran sweaters for all of the members our family, in whatever color you wanted, that we all continue to wear and cherish. Additionally, she was an excellent and accomplished baker, world famous (within our family) for what are, literally, the best apple pies of all time.
She is survived by her husband, Ted, her two sons, Ted and Mark, and her six grandchildren: Jane, Samuel, Anne, Mary Elizabeth, Benjamin, and James. A wake will be held at Lane Funeral Home in Winchester, MA on Monday, March 25, 2019 from 4 – 7PM, and a funeral mass will be held at St. Eulalia’s Parish in Winchester, MA on Tuesday March 26th, 2019 at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Eulalia’s Parish, 50 Ridge Street Winchester, MA 01890.
