Malcolm W  Johnston
JOHNSTON, Malcolm W. Engineer and Land Preservationist Malcolm W. Johnston passed away on Friday October 27, 2017 in E. Sandwich, MA after a 5-month battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma. He was a 21 year resident of South Dartmouth, MA where he resided with his wife, Sara (Sally Harvey), and son, Douglas N., a medical student at Tufts University School of Medicine. He was born in Boston, MA, son of the late William L. and Catherine (Feidler) Johnston, and raised in Winchester, MA. He later lived in Cambridge, MA and Belmont, MA prior to moving to Dartmouth. Malcolm worked at Boeing Airplane Co. in Seattle, WA, then served in the US Navy inactive reserves from 1961 to 1969. He simultaneously worked at the Draper Laboratory, Cambridge, MA, on space and defense programs, interfacing with the Apollo astronauts and becoming Manager of Space Program Development. After his retirement, he volunteered for and served on the Boards of Directors of Mass Audubon and the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust. His proudest accomplishment was his recent work securing funds with DNRT and The Coalition for Buzzards Bay for the preservation of Ocean View Farm, more than 100 acres of open space on Buzzards Bay. A nature and animal lover, he also volunteered with the Lloyd Center for the Environment in Dartmouth. Malcolm was 81 years old and was a Mechanical Engineering graduate of Cornell University. He is survived by his wife, son, brother, William and his wife Nancy (Ivers) Johnston of Weston, MA, sister Nancy and her husband, Robert Asman of Washington, DC, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations to the Humane Society and Shelter- SouthCoast (Dartmouth), 31 Ventura Dr. Dartmouth, MA 02747; Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, P.O. Box 7057, Dartmouth, MA 02747; Mass Audubon Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary,1280 Horseneck Road, Westport, MA 02790; or the Lloyd Center for the Environment, 430 Potomska Road, Dartmouth, MA 02748 will be appreciated. Burial services will be private. Visiting Hours: There are no visiting hours.
