Lexington, MA — Ernest Paterson Tweedy (‘Pat’) 97, died Wednesday April 12, 2017 at the Aberjona Nursing Center in Winchester. He was at home until March and died peacefully in his sleep.
He leaves his daughter Diana Margaret Oliver of Richmond CA, 3 sons, Robert of Los Angeles, David of Weybridge (UK) and Christopher of Lowell MA and his long-term carer ‘Bonnie’, of Belmont. Also 6 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, many nieces and nephews and a few close friends.
Born and raised in Scarborough and Hull in the UK, his father was a mathematics teacher and school master and his mother was a piano teacher. Pat was a keen maths and science student, pianist and athlete at Hymer’s School in Hull. He went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College in London graduating in 1941 during onset of WW2. His role during the war involved the design and installation of radar defences in the UK and later, communication infrastructure in Singapore and Malaysia. After the war, Pat met his wife, Margaret (nee Barnes) in Chelmsford, Essex while working for Marconi Electronics and they were married in 1947.
Pat’s work took him to East Africa with Margaret and Diana where Robert was born. He moved with the family, via the UK, to Montreal. There followed a short period in Lexington followed by 2 years living in Paris before finally settling permanently in Lexington. David and Christopher were both born there and along with Diana and Robert, grew up there.
Pat chose Lexington where he could combine his life-long passions - skiing, sailing, hiking, culture (classical music and theatre) with a fulfilling career in electronics and communication. He was at GTE Laboratories in Waltham MA for over 25 years at the leading edge of ‘on-demand video’ services and has several patents in his name. He took pride in his research and relished the friends he made at work and in his leisure interests.
Pat had a passion for sailing and won many awards in his beloved Thistle class at the Cottage Park Yacht Club in Winthrop MA. He was a keen skier, enjoying winter weekends with his family in NH and enjoyed hiking in the New England hills and mountains with family and friends. He could often be seen walking in Lexington with his pet dog(s) and continued to walk in and around Lexington and attend the gym regularly, well into his early 90s. He was also a regular attendee for many years at the Church of Our Redeemer in Lexington.
Pat was a frequent traveller to the UK, enjoying the company of family and lifelong friends, retaining close contact with his British heritage.
A funeral service will be held on April 29 at Lane Funeral Home in Winchester MA at 10:30 am. A visitation period will be held fro 10 am thru 10:30 am Please make donations to the UK or US Dementia Society in lieu of flowers.
