He resided in New Rochelle, NY and then Cambridge, MA for 19 years before recently moving to Winchester with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife Ellen Madigan Newman, and his daughters Riley Elizabeth age 3 1/2, and twins Caitrin Mary and Teagan Alice, 17 months. He is also survived by his father Thomas U. Newman and devoted sisters Jane Newman and Patricia Dombroski of Wall; niece, Kimberly Newman Gargin, and nephews Benjamin and David Dombroski. He is predeceased by his mother Alice Jean (Van Schoick) Newman and brother James A. Newman.
A graduate of Wall High School, Ben received a BA in Political Science from Fordham University, class of 1977. He started his lifelong career in New York City as an advertising representative for TeleRep, and then spent several years in sales at MMT. Ten years later, Ben moved to broadcasting sales with Westinghouse Company, also in NYC. In 1992, Ben relocated to Boston to Westinghouse-owned WBZ TV as a broadcasting sales manager, and he has remained at WBZ (CBS Channel 4) since then. During his career, Ben effortlessly built a remarkable network of friends and colleagues across the country. His kind, gentle style and warm smile touched the lives of so many individuals during his career. He will also be remembered as a fanatically loyal Yankee Fan living harmoniously in the middle of Red Sox Nation.
Ben was a lifelong reader of the NY Times, and always livened the conversation by sharing his knowledge about sports, news and current events. He was a past member of the New York Athletic Club. Ben was also an avid golfer with a single digit handicap, and a former member of the Pocasset Golf Club on Cape Cod, where he was proud to have played a round at even par. He considered himself lucky enough to have played at distinguished courses around the world, including; The Olympic Club, Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Winged Foot, Ballybunion (Ireland), The Olde Course at St. Andrew’s (Scotland), Carnoustie (Scotland), Troon (Scotland), Turnberry (Scotland), The Country Club, Eastwood Ho, and Kittansett. He was on the winning team of the First Annual First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan Golf tournament, with his wife, father and nephew.
Ben loved the Jersey Shore and spent many years lifeguarding at Essex and Sussex Hotel, Spring Lake, NJ. Through the support of caring family and friends, Ben was able to recently enjoy a last visit to his family’s home in Manasquan, which included trips to Manasquan beach and the Point Pleasant Boardwalk, and visits by many dear and devoted friends and family. In addition, Ben and Ellen and their girls enjoyed many wonderful times at their home in the White Mountains, in Lincoln, New Hampshire.
Ben is also survived by a loving and supportive extended family, including in-laws Francis (Bud) and Mary Madigan, and five brother and sister-in laws; Kathy and Tom Dickinson, Fran and Susan Madigan, Mary Fran and Richard Bauchspies, Margaret and Frank Tietje, and James and Marybeth Madigan, along with 12 nieces and nephews.
