ELLIS, Dorothea “Dorie” (Loughlin) Matriach of Tufts University Atletics, October 14, 2011, Age 102.Wife of the late Frederick M. Ellis. Devoted mother of Faith Heneghan and her husband Jack of Marshfield and Susan Costas and her husband Steve of Lawrence. Cherished Grandmother of eight- Brian, Terrance & Kevin Heneghan, Karen Getchell, Sheila Naghsh, Kelly McNamara, Kerrie La Broad and Michael McLaughlin. Dorie will also be remembered fondly as “Great Grams” by 17 great Grandchildren ranging in age from 26 to 2. Sister of Mary Loughlin Smith and the late Edward F. Loughlin, Jr. She is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews. Dorothea Loughlin Ellis was born July 8, 1909 in Concord, MA. She was the daughter of Edward F. and Lillian (Sweeney) Loughlin.
Dorie, as she was known, graduated from Concord High School in 1927 and from Jackson College (Tufts University) in 1931. On Graduation day, she married her college sweetheart Frederick “Fish” Ellis, a renowned athlete, who later coached football, basketball, and golf at Tufts. Dorie was also an athlete and played field hockey at Tufts. She was also captain of the first women’s baseball team.
Dorie taught at Bridgton Academy and Dean Academy. She also worked in admissions and publications at Tufts and was a very active member of the Jackson Alumnae Assoc., the Jumbo Club, and recipient of a Jumbo Club award, and the Tufts Alumni Council from whom she received a Distinguished Service Award. After the death of her husband, Dorie moved to Yarmouthport, MA where she lived for 36 years. She was a member of the Friday Club and a volunteer at the Museum of Natural History, The Cape Cod Hospital and the Yarmouthport Village Library. She was an avid fan of Tufts, the Patriots and the Red Sox and celebrated her 100th birthday at a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. Funeral from the Doyle-Lane Funeral Home 171 Bedford St. (Rte. 62 Burlington/Bedford line) BURLINGTON on Wednesday, October 19th at 9 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Margaret’s Church Winn St. Burlington at 10 A.M. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-8 P.M. Interment Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. In Lieu of flower’s Donations may be made in Dorie’s Memory to: Frederick M. and Dorothea L. Ellis Scholarship Fund at: Tufts University 80 George St. Medford, MA 02155.
